Hastings Rock Returns

Written By Johnny Anders

Hastings Rock radio is returning to the local airwaves once again in May 2014, but it was a close run thing!

The radio station, which first rocked Hastings back in August 1993, has based their studios at the Kings Head pub in Ore for the past two years. But the pub closed recently, leaving the Hastings Rock committee with a bit of a predicament.

Thankfully a solution has been found, and Hastings Rock will be returning to where many feel is the stations ‘spiritual home’, the Robert De Mortain pub on The Ridge, in Hastings.

Broadcasting will start, subject to license, at midnight on Saturday, 3 May and run non-stop for 28 days until midnight on Friday, 30 May. Listeners will be able to tune in locally on 87.7FM, and also online across the world via the internet.

This will be Hastings Rocks 21st anniversary, and their 17th actual broadcast. That’s quite an achievement for an operation run entirely by volunteers, that relies on advertising to pay the £6,000+ costs of the 28 day broadcast.

Thankfully, local company Booker and Best have stepped in and are sponsoring the station once again in May. Hastings Rock will also be supporting St Michael’s Hospice during their 28 days on air, as they have done for several years now.

New Chairman Tony Bell told me that “listeners can expect the usual unique mix of great rock music that they’ve come to know and love over the years, plus interaction with their favourite DJ’s. We even have a brand new official Facebook page to help with that.

“Hastings Rock has come a long way since station President Nick Apps first set up the radio station, with a group of like minded rock music fans, back in 1993. This is our 21st anniversary, and we intend to celebrate in style. It’s a 28 day long party that all of our listeners are invited to.”

For the uninitiated, Hastings Rock plays rock based music from the late 1950’s, right up to the present day. So expect to hear everything from Elvis and Chuck Berry, via Metallica and Led Zeppelin, to Arctic Monkeys and Foo Fighters.

As in previous years, Hastings Rock will have specialist music shows on weekday evenings between 7–9pm. From Blues through to Heavy Rock, stopping at Prog Rock and Rock n Roll on the way. Local music will also feature heavily during the 28 days on air. Apart from local artists being played via the main Playlist, the best local tracks will also get regular airplay on the stations ‘A’ List. The specialist Local Music Show, hosted by our very own Andy Gunton, will be on Sunday evenings between 8–10pm.

It sounds like a feast for the ears, so get your radios tuned, and get ready to rock.
