The ninth annual Hastings Fat Tuesday celebrations are fast approaching and take place this year between 9th and 13th February.
The festivities seem to get bigger and better every year, and 2018 is no exception.
Just in case you don't know what Fat Tuesday is, the Hastings Fat Tuesday music festival is the UK’s largest Mardi Gras celebration which showcases Hastings’ thriving music scene – opening its doors to a wealth of musical talent and music fans alike.
It has been hailed as Hastings’ answer to SXSW in Texas, or Brighton’s Great Escape festival, and quite rightly so in our humble opinion.
Full details of all the events, and there plenty of them, can be found on the official Hastings Fat Tuesday website at: hastingsfattuesday.co.uk
But the highlights, from a musical perspective, include:
Friday, 9th Feb:
- Fat Friday Launch Party:
Starting as they mean to go on, raucous punk-folk sextet Skinny Lister headline the opening night at St Mary In The Castle. Support comes from this year’s Festival Featured Act, local singer-songwriter Jamie Smart.
Saturday, 10th Feb:
- Unplugged Saturday (Afternoon - Throghout Hastings Old Town)
An afternoon of acoustic music where 40 acts play 15-minute sets at participating venues, expect everything from acoustic rock to Irish folk, a-capella, blues, brass, shanties, and world music.

Dress up to get down. Time to unleash the carnival spirit and don your most outrageous outfit for this legendary event. Featuring live music from the irrepressible Mr Wilson’s Second Liners.
Sunday, 11th Feb:

The culmination of the fabulous Umbrella Parade brings festival-goers together to enjoy food and drink and great music, as the rivalry of the four second line brass bands comes to a head in a dramatic play-off.

Tuesday, 13th Feb:
- The Fat Tuesday Tour (Evening - Various venues)
The main event: a night of fancy dress, fabulous feathers, beads, masks and music! Twelve venues host ‘The Fat Tuesday Tour’ where 24 bands play 20 minute sets in 3 venues.
- The After Party (Late Evening - The Palace and Brass Monkey)
The Fat Tuesday after party is now infamous, and deservedly so; this year we welcome MAMA JOSIE to lead the proceedings!
Hastings Fat Tuesday has gone from strength to strength over recent years, bringing thousands of people into Hastings during the dark days of winter, and flooding the bars and streets of the town with revellers from across the UK and beyond.
All of which is mainly down to the hard work and vision of Adam Daly and Bob Tipler, who started this crazy event.
You can find official Hastings Fat Tuesday programmes in most of the pubs and clubs in Hastings, which give an overview of all the events taking place over that long weekend, including who is playing where on Fat Tuesday itself.
The Stinger is very proud to be an official supporter of Hastings Fat Tuesday, and to be involved with such a great event.
We’ll see you there.
Let the good times roll.
